Women of DC Busts Series 1 – Black Canary / Zatanna Review
Posted by: Dr_Teng In: Statues
Up for today is one of DC’s few bust/statue lines that haven’t ended after they made 3 or 4 figures, and not only that, but one of their best in terms of sculpts. The Women of DC line bust line. I’ll start it off with my two least favourite of the ones I own, the series 1 Women of DC Zatanna and Black Canary. Both of these were based off of Adam Hughes’ designs, which made me wary to get them since I’ve seen his girlfriend and one of his friends act like a dick on his behalf on message boards. Not that they necessarily gave his opinion, but it makes me wary when friends/relations of an artist seem to be shitting on their fans. MOVING ON.

These busts are designed pretty much as pinups, with the upcoming full-size statues having a different feel to them. I guess you could say they’re both in action poses, although Zatanna’s is more silly than anything else. I usually hate busts, but certain ones, like these, have rather unique poses, bases, and seperate themselves nicely from full-size statues. When I look at Bowen’s busts for example, I see a full-size figure cut in two, and that kind of irks me. With these, they look like they should be busts.

Both of them have fabric for their stockings, which I thought was a nice touch. Let’s start off with my problems. Despite the unique pose, Black Canary is a little off. The whole eyes shut thing, ehhhh, not exactly for me. She fits well with the rest of the busts, so I’m keeping her, but I think it could’ve been done better. Zatanna on the other hand, great pose, but paint problems. In the pictures, you can clearly see her hairline is screwed up, and the tongue looks weird as hell from up close. Definetly not as nice as the promo shots on the box make it look. You have to expect some differences with handpainted figures, it’s just unfortunate to see a Zatanna with these problems. Also, I wasn’t paying attention when I removed Black Canary from the wrap and accidently snapped off a figure (I glued it, you can probably tell). It’s VERY EASY to do this, so be careful.

Oh, and Black Canary’s hair is a little too dirty. That’s not a big deal though. In general, the outfits are very well sculpted and well painted. They’re good representations of the figures, and since these two aren’t the most popular, I’m not sure if they’ll get a figure designed by anyone else in this series (Supergirl and Wonder Woman both have 2 figures so far).
Gotta say, love the bases on both. Black Canary’s is coming apart from her scream, and Zatanna’s is an awesome magic box. The paint on Zatanna’s could’ve been a little bigger, but oh well, I got a semi-dud, what can you do? The Black Canary is really stacked, as that last picture shows. But it wouldn’t be Adam Hughes’ art without tarting up the characters somewhat. Despite my reservations about him as an artist, even these two, which again, are my least favourite of the series, are pretty cool and very well done. It’s a great line that’s still seeing upcoming releases, and I recommend it.
3.5/5
