An early Bendis story about the Torso killer, the case that brought down Eliot Ness of Untouchables’ fame.
There’s a lot to like about this gritty crime drama. First off, it’s an utterly fascinating case, and I’d never read about it before. Second, when the art nails it, it really nails it. The problems with it are that more often than not, especially later on, the art is confusing and makes figuring out what’s going on rather difficult. Now it’s possible I am a child and unable to comprehend visuals, but I’m usually pretty good at that. The mixing of live action and drawing in certain scenes doesn’t work at all.
The writing can drag a little, but since it’s such a fascinating case, that’s really a minor complaint. The case, and the stress on Eliot Ness, it builds up in such a great way. You can really feel the toll that everything is taking on him.
3.5/5. It’s a gruesome story with a lot of depth and it’s worth reading, but there are a fair bit of flaws to go around.
