Kotobukiya Dark Phoenix Bishoujo statue review

With 3 versions of the Kotobukiya Phoenix Bishoujo statue available, I went for the Dark Phoenix version. While the Bishoujo statues aren’t up everyone’s alley, I’m a big fan of Shunya Yamashita, who’s work they’re based off of, so let’s see whether this one lives up to the other ones I own.

I picked the Dark Phoenix version because it appeared to have the most interesting elements going for it. While I slightly prefer the green outfit, the metallic sheen and the transparent flames drew me towards this one.

The metallic costume works wonderfully here. It draws attention to itself even more than the red and gold colour scheme already would. The flaming red hair with the golden gloves going through it is just gorgeous. It stands out quite nicely from the rest of the Bishoujo statues. As you can see from the shots, the paint in general is very nice, even on the face. About the only exception is on the Phoenix symbol itself there are some very minor flaws in the detail work along the edges. But when you’re at 1/8th scale or so, it happens. It’s not even visible unless you stick your face in her miniature chest.

There’s no slacking in the sculpting department either. The base is nice, the hair flows wonderfully, she’s got a great comic body, and it’s a really interesting pinup style pose.

5/5. The visual flair with the transparencies and metallic paint sold this one for me and it’s still my favourite of the 3. The other 2 are great as well, but I’d recommend this one the most.

In an amazingly well thought out strategy, Kotobukiya is releasing their white Phoenix bishoujo SDCC exclusive statue up for preorder on June 11th, rather than forcing their customers to sit through absurd lines at raffles at the convention itself.

They’ve announced it’s limited to 500, so I’m sure it won’t last long. It’ll be available on the main Kotobukiya site, make sure to sign up prior to the 11th.

Based on the Phoenix design from the Endsong series, as I recall. No clue on edition size or anything, but it looks like a nice edition to the line.

Sculpted by Koei Matsumoto, White Phoenix is constructed of high-quality pvc plastic and stands approximately 9 inches tall (in 1/8 scale with the other Marvel x Bishoujo statues). Quite possibly the best Bishoujo statues yet. While I prefer the regular Phoenix, they’ve done some very interesting paint work on the Dark Phoenix, despite it not being mirrored, I’m quite tempted to buy it regardless. Images under the cut.

One of my favourite lines going right now, the small and affordable Kotobukiya Bishoujo line just showed off their upcoming Phoenix/Dark Phoenix products as well as some concept art for Emma. Phoenix/Dark Phoenix are looking great so far, though I wish their poses were reversed to each other instead of being the same. Emma has a rather interesting pose, can’t wait to see some sneak peeks of that.

Upcoming Statue Sneak Peeks

During/after SDCC, there were a ton of statue sneak peeks that were posted in various videos and so on but aren’t up on the statue producers’ sites yet. I’ve decided to compile a few of them so you guys have an idea of what’s coming out next year.

Kotobukiya

In Kotobukiya’s very successful Bishoujo series of ladies, next year we’re getting Phoenix and Psylocke.

Bowen Designs

He’s been showing a bunch lately, but I’m mostly looking forward to the White Queen (2 versions) and the Kitty Pryde (2 versions as well).

Sideshow

Now this is a tricky one, since I have no clue which one of these will be the final pose (possibly neither?) but Ariel Olivetti recently showed some Hulk artwork. He’s done the Venom piece for Sideshow, and I believe is also behind the upcoming Punisher piece. So it’s a pretty solid indication that he’s doing this one as well for Sideshow.

I prefer the Smackdown pose, ala the Bowen 1/6th or 1/7th.
