Not being a fan of Sideshow’s earlier Adam Hughes She-Hulk comiquette, it was great to see a more traditionally styled She-Hulk from Sideshow. While it wasn’t the one piece outfit that many associate She-Hulk with, it’s an accurate version of her outfit from the cover this statue is based on (She-Hulk #29 I believe). Plus I’ve heard if you take her pants off, she’s actually wearing a one piece, so with a bit of customization you could get that look as well. But I didn’t want to risk damaging the fabric!

One of the few complaints about this statue is that the musculature isn’t quite large enough for She-Hulk. I can understand the complaints because She-Hulk is traditionally drawn as a hot female body builder, although in the cover this is based off of, she doesn’t look nearly that large. There’s some well done musculature around the abs and there’s some on the arms but it wouldn’t have hurt to make her a little bigger. She would’ve been just as feminine and attractive with a little more bulk.

The rest of the sculpting? Very nice indeed! The cracks on the road, laces on the shoes, and the way the hair flows are all very appealing. She has a very pretty face as well.

The paint job on this is really great. Starting from the base, the contrast between the side and top of the broken street is a nice touch. The shade of green they picked is perfect, it’s a more flattering one than the darker green on the AH comiquette. Her hair is a dark green with well applied light green highlights. The shading done to enhance the ab musculature and the eyes are exactly like you’d hope for.

About the only part that isn’t perfect is the detail work around the hands. Specifically, the black outlining the fingers. It’s a little too heavy. When I initially received this statue, the fingers around the meter looked really bad, however, Sideshow replaced that with a much nicer hand. If you have issues with yours, contact them, they may be able to help you out!

The Premium Format parts of this are the pants and belt. The pants are made of a nice thick material and lined well, the belt looks like a belt. Given that it’s a fairly simple outfit, it required no futzing to get it to look right and they’re tight in the areas you’d want them to be tight.

As for the exclusive, it’s a parking meter. While it’s not cover accurate, it looks pretty cool! It’s well sculpted and painted and fits the scene. I wouldn’t consider it necessary but it’s certainly a nice touch.

4.5/5. Almost exactly the She-Hulk statue I was hoping for. Slightly more muscle-y and it would’ve been perfect.

There seems to be a seam on the neckline, possible switch-out head?

Here’s a classic statue that I wanted for quite a while, the Sideshow Collectibles Buffy the Vampire Slayer Premium Format statue. There were two versions of this, the one you’re seeing here and one with leather pants. I think that look is a little more iconic but both have that Buffy feel going for them.

You can tell this is one of the earlier Premium Format statues because it has a certain simplicity to it. In most cases that’s a negative, but I think for Buffy it works just fine. Although her hair could be improved, you can tell that has a strange look to it. They did a great job on her likeness however, while it’s visible in pictures, it’s far more easily seen in person. I found this with the Buffy throne maquette as well, which doesn’t hit the likeness as nicely as this one did.

The paint is fine but kind of flat in some areas. It could use some minor cosmetic improvements here and there, same with the hair. The highlights and the shading on the hair seem a little random. I’m a little disappointed in the material but not surprised due to the older nature of the statue. It feels a little cheap and totally wrong for the kind of dress it is. It’s partially transparent when there isn’t anything behind it (between the legs) which would be cool if it were intended, but it’s not, it’s due to how thin the material is.

The exclusive was the Vampyr book. A simple exclusive but it looks nice. Shame there isn’t a better way to display it with the statue.

4/5. Overall a nice statue that’s held up pretty well, far better than most classic Premium Format statues. While the Buffy on throne statue is quite nice, this one gets the nod from me.

I’m more a fan of the comic style than I am the movie style, but with a design this good, there’s room for variety. I’ve seen the newer Hellboy PF based on the second movie, it’s utterly gorgeous. Now this one, I hadn’t seen it in person prior to buying it, and I’d barely seen any shots. Sideshow used to put up like 3 shots per figure before instead of the dozen+ they put up now, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I cracked it open and saw that the arm was in a completely different pose than the promo photos. Had I been ripped off?! Nope! This one has an interesting feature. The arms are soft and can be angled in different ways. You can keep them down for a casual look or try to hold them up in a more battle-ready pose. I’m not sure what material the soft arms contained but they managed to remain stationary during my review.

What surprised me the most was how fantastic the face sculpt was. The likeness looks far better than expected and the way the face is textured is gorgeous. Considering how off I think most of Sideshow’s earlier likenesses are (especially in the Star Trek/Star Wars lines, ugh), I wasn’t complaining. The chest was also nicely done with that similar rough texture. Paint apps were rock solid.

One thing that was disappointing was the jacket. It looks cheap. The patch on the jacket looks cheap. I realize techniques weren’t quite as good then but it looks far inferior to what’s done now in the 1/6th range. However, I do like the pants. They did a good job on the little BRPD belt buckle too, shame about the belt.

3.5/5. Despite how impressive some parts are, when the main fabric item looks cheap, it detracts from the whole product. If you could get a custom jacket made, it would easily bump this to a 4.

Once you bust him out of the cardboard enclosure, you’ll notice he comes with some quality display options. He includes an alternate head as well as an alternate flaming heart hand, both held in place via pegs and magnets. They’ve done a great job on the seam lines, you won’t ever spot them.

Right off the bat I thought the likeness was great on both heads. It had been a year or two since I’d seen Temple of Doom so I busted it out to compare. Sideshow did indeed do a damn good job and best of all, both heads have crazy eyes and a crazy expression. He legitimately looks like a dude that would rip your heart out. Take a look at the weathering on that skull head, or on the paint in general. I’m really pleased to say I have zero issues with it.

Ignore that minor colour shift on the hands, that was a photography thing, both are painted the same shade. I’ve mentioned my issues with transparent resin for flames and smoke before, it often doesn’t look realistic. In this case, the flame is well sculpted and with proper lighting it looks pretty cool, but it still suffers from transparent resin simply not looking like flames. While I prefer the regular hand, in the right display situation, I fully believe that flaming hand would look killer. The base is superb. It’s similar to the ToD Indy with the skulls. The skulls look like they died miserable deaths, the rocks surrounding them are well crafted, and the top of the base has some fine weathering.

Let’s look at the fabric. His robes are a thick material all over. The red and black contrast nicely, just as they did in the movie. I did notice there were some loose threads on the bottom of his robe but that can be fixed with a tiny pair of scissors and a few seconds of your time.

Unfortunately, this is another Sideshow review where I should’ve consulted the movie before I took my shots. While the way I’ve displayed him looks fine, the shoulder robe is supposed to be displayed in a different manner and part of his robe should’ve went over his left hand. Having fixed it post-review, it does look better that way. Thankfully, I’m better at dressing myself in real life than I am at dressing up Sideshow PFs, since this is the second or third time this has happened. In another mixed media touch, you’ve got the hair from the shrunken head. You’re supposed to make it billow out so the hair is wide but I felt it looked a little better like this. Not movie accurate, deal with it.

The exclusive item is the skull chalice! Almost as gross in sculpted miniature form as in the movie. This goes well as a counterpart to the monkey brains the ToD PF Indy has. The accessories in general are very well sculpted and painted.

In the interests of full disclosure, I received this as a review sample from Sideshow. On one hand, it’s unfortunate for my e-cred that the first statue I get from them gets top marks. On the other hand, anyone following the site or seeing my posts on various message boards would know I felt this was a superb statue from the moment I saw it at SDCC so I’m glad the retail release lives up to that. Top marks all around, one of my favourite Premium Format statues to date.

Let’s get right to everyone’s problem with this statue, the face. J. Scott Campbell’s got a unique style, which is why his commissions go for such ridiculous amounts. Unfortunately, it’s very easy to get wrong. I remember from the day the full gallery for this was revealed, tons of people had issues with it. I did. The face went from looking attractive in the illustration to being a disaster, it’s one of my most disliked faces on any statue that I’ve seen. It’s not entirely the sculpt to blame, the paint plays a huge part. Take a look at the original art and compare.

You can see the sculpting isn’t that far off on the face, but the small changes make it worse. The eyes and the lips, primarily. The lipstick is atrocious, it should cover her entire lips, like it does on the illustration. The eyes are unappealing and what is with that damn eye makeup? I’ve seen custom paintjobs on this that improved it but couldn’t quite fix it. However, MANY more people (myself included) would have better opinions of it with some improved paint. Hell, I think I’ll fix mine up that way. The downwards angle of the head doesn’t help either, it should’ve been looking straight on.

Let’s get to a nicer part, the body. The one issue I have here is the stomach to hip ratio is even more wider than the illustration. Not THAT much, but it makes her look unhealthy, like she’s still popping on that White Queen corset a little too often. They seem to have reduced her gigantic fake breasts from the original art a little bit, but the main reason you’re seeing a difference is because I didn’t fold the cape ends more.

You’re going to need to fidget with her pants to get them looking exactly right, you can see the belt is off a little on mine. The fabric is strange. I’m pretty sure they used the same type on the pants and the cape. On the pants, it feels good because it’s tight against her. The cape looks fine from the back but from the inside, the fabric looks a little cheap. It’s not that noticeable, but it should’ve had the same texture and look on both sides. The cape has a wire in it so you can adjust it to whatever position you want.

The base looks great but I’m not sure what they were going for. The illustration doesn’t have a base so I guess it’s a destroyed building or the X-Mansion getting blown to hell for the dozenth time? Who knows. The black base at the bottom holds it nice and steady.

Aside from the face, the paint is pretty good. I think the hair looks pretty decent, skin tone is good, and the white sculpted areas are just the right amount of glossy.

2.5/5. On some statues, a solid body and good pose would make up for such a face. But the face is SO BAD that it’s distracting from the rest of the statue.

Having recently reviewed the Sideshow Collectibles Mystique comiquette, seemed like I should’ve reviewed the Premium Format statue first! Better late than never though, let’s check it.

As mentioned in my comiquette review, I prefer this shade of blue for Mystique. My lighting situation wasn’t ideal for these photos, I wasn’t shooting with my normal equipment, but I believe it gives a good idea of how attractive this shade of blue is. The shading is really nicely done on the body, and while more subtle on the hair, looks good there as well. The eyes look a little strange with the yellow pupils, and there’s something about the lips that isn’t quite perfect.

I’m not sure if the base has any relevance to Mystique but who cares, it looks good. She’s in an appealing pinup pose, however due to the nature of this pose, she looks better when you look up at her rather than down at her or straight on. She’s a good statue regardless, she’s just at her best above eye level. The sculpting on the body and hair is nicely done. Mystique has a very athletic body, as she should given what she does, a nice face, and obviously the solid pose.

The mixed media aspect can look a little sloppy until you futz with it. You can see what I mean in the close-up pictures. The straps on her top fold over a little, the pants could use a little tightening. For the guys that try to get her naked, don’t bother, they just look like blue lumps, no detail! It’s not worth the time you’ll need to re-adjust the straps.

4.5/5. While I gave it the same score as the comiquette, I slightly prefer this one. Both are excellent choices, go with whichever one appeals to you more.
