My precious Mighty Muggs are back in action with a SDCC exclusive Avengers offering! Let’s see if it was worth the $38 it cost me.

Quick Buying Options : Now sold out from the Hasbro online store, check Amazon and Ebay.

$38 for 4 mini Muggs and a regular Mugg is a bit of a price increase but it’s an SDCC exclusive, that’s expected. The box they came in (pictured later) is both custom made and hilarious, with Giant Man busting out of the box while the little fellas stay safely inside. The back blurb is well written too, made me chuckle. With a box that good, it was tempting to keep them in there…but no, I couldn’t, I had to pry them out of their plastic prison.

Giant Man is a standard Mugg. Good design, decent shading and all that. The Minis are hilarious looking but they have some minor issues. The Hulk and the Iron Man arms appear to be partially connected. When you move an arm up or down, both arms move at the same time. Thor and Cap, perhaps because they have non-removable items, have arms that can move separately. Not sure why all of them can’t move their arms individually. Thor’s helmet is pretty barebones in terms of detail.

The paint is definitely weaker than previous Muggs. Not terrible but some clear issues, especially on the Minis. If you look at the high-res pics, you can tell. Hulk’s belt line, Iron Man’s dark red lines, basically some of the detailed areas. Fortunately the designs on all the Minis are hilarious and I can overlook the issues.

Pretty sweet set and it makes me hopeful for future Mugg sets. Adorable, cool designs, still reasonably priced. Now if they’d release black Minis so I could make a few more Avengers, I’d be set.

3.5/5. Higher quality standards on the paint would be a good step. Giving all of the Minis to ability to move their hands individually would be another improvement.

Buying Options : Now sold out from the Hasbro online store, check Amazon and Ebay.

I’m sure this doesn’t matter to a fair few of you, but I like it when companies try to improve their environmental practices.

Beginning in 2011, the Company will eliminate all wire ties from its packaging. In addition, for 2011 the Company has set a goal that at least 75 percent of its paper packaging will be derived from recycled material or sources that practice sustainable forest management.

By 2015, Hasbro has set a goal of 90 percent usage of these materials and sources for all of its paperboard packaging and in-box game content. Hasbro is also working with its core toy and game licensees to help them put similar standards in place.

To further support and ensure the success of the Company’s efforts in sustainability, Hasbro will be hiring a Director of Product and Packaging Sustainability, reporting directly into the Global Chief Development Officer.

“Walmart applauds Hasbro’s industry leadership position in the area of environmental sustainability, which includes its initiative to systematically reduce, and eventually replace, wire ties with sustainable and innovative materials made from paper rattan and other materials,” said Laura Phillips, Walmart’s Senior Vice President of toys and seasonal merchandising.

“Hasbro’s commitment to sustainability has been, and continues to be a high priority in virtually all facets of our operations,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s President and CEO. “The Company’s ongoing focus on sustainability is critically important to Hasbro and to the consumers around the world who enjoy our brands and products. Importantly, we will be taking additional steps in the area of sustainability going forward, building upon what we have already accomplished in recent years.”

The advances in sustainability announced by Hasbro reflect its leadership position and an ongoing corporate responsibility commitment, with a specific focus on making improvements that will promote sustainable sourcing of materials. In 2010, Hasbro significantly reduced plastic bags from its product instructions, removing some 800,000 pounds of material worldwide from the waste stream. Currently, more than 90 percent of solid waste generated at the Company’s owned and operated manufacturing facilities in Massachusetts and Ireland is recycled.

This week I’m reviewing one of the most impressive toys I’ve looked at, the Hasbro Cloverfield toy. This piece was delayed and most people thought it was cancelled, then like the movie itself, Cloverfield popped out of nowhere. He sold out pretty quick too.

I got this sucker in the mail and I was immediately impressed. I’m not the kind of guy that does unboxing routines but I took two pictures to show this off.

Just look at that thing. Flawless box design, open it up and it’s even better. Clover himself is incredibly well articulated. All his joints move and he can go into an absurd amount of poses. He’s got a strong grip too. My wife wore him around on Halloween (she was dressed as the Statue of Liberty) and he managed to keep his grip the whole night. The box opens up into a backdrop of a partially destroyed New York City with images of the movie cast along the bottom.

He comes with two faces, both of which are fantastic. The ferocious roaring face and the oddly cute closed mouth face. He looks like a horrible monster puppy with the latter face. The roaring mouth features inflated breathing sacks, they look great.

The paint is consistently good. The only critique I can level on it is there’s no real transition between how dirty the “arms” are and the chest area. While it’s noticeable in the pictures, it didn’t bother me in the slightest in person.

It also comes with a few accessories too! There’s a ton of parasites and the destroyed head from the Statue of Liberty. You can see one of the feet for a size comparison. To top it all off, Cloverfield roars.

5/5. What a fantastic toy. If you’re a of the movie, you’ve got to get this. He’s huge and takes up a lot of space but he’s well worth it.

Buying Options : Doesn’t even show up on Hasbro’s site anymore, you’re stuck with Ebay.

It’s $109 and here’s the blurb about it :

    * The largest action figure AT-AT ever made!
* AT-AT Driver and launching speeder bike included!
* Seating for tons of figures!
* Includes one (1) figure, others sold separately!

Measuring over 2-feet tall and over 2-feet long, this huge AT-AT is sure to be the must-have Star Wars toy this season! Modeled after the Imperial Walkers from The Empire Strikes Back, the head of the vehicle alone can carry tons of figures. The multi-level body has room for even more troopers, plus the articulated legs, firing cannons, and other surprising features are going to blow away the Rebel forces on Hoth!

——————-

Can you imagine getting that as a kid? I’d be overjoyed to get it now, let alone when I was younger!

Not sure how many of you saw Hasbro’s Millenium Falcon they released a while back. It was enormous and really nicely done for a mass-produced toy. If I had enough space to fit that monstrosity in my house, I would’ve picked it up in a minute. If I had to guess, this AT-AT is going to be just as large, if not larger than the Falcon.

This was posted over at Yodanews and a few Mugg sites :

“YN: A lot of people were sad to hear that the Mighty Muggs will be TRU Exclusives this fall, can you give us any more information on this? We heard from e-stores and Hasbro direct dealers that MM were a great seller. With a lot of collectors and kids not able to get to TRU in all areas will these also be sold on Hasbro’s Website or TRU’s site? Any chance they will come back to a broader release in 2010?

H: Despite fans of the format, Mighty Muggs seemed to appeal to a small but passionate minority of the overall Star Wars collecting audience compared to all our other Star Wars sub lines. There is no chance that Mighty Muggs, at least in the current size or format, will come back as a broader or national release. It is unknown whether TRU.com will be selling Mighty Muggs, but we’ll pass on the encouragement. It will not be sold through HasbroToyShop.com.”

Hasbro seriously sucks if they can’t successfully market something like Muggs effectively. Everytime I went to the US, I had problems finding the ones I wanted (and between myself and my wife, we own a MASSIVE LOAD of Muggs, like 50+), and within Canada it was near impossible to find anything aside from the first two waves of Star Wars Muggs. I had to order from Hasbrotoyshop constantly, which tells me that their retail distribution was just awful, but that’s not uncommon, since I’d always heard complaints about that with their other lines. Then selling the line exclusive to Toys R Us? Are you kidding me?

I can understand if these were warming the pegs anywhere…but they really weren’t. Sure, a few ugly figures would stick around here and there, but for the most part, they were constantly sold out. I guess this is how Marvel Legends’ fans felt when Hasbro screwed up their toy line, laffo.

Oh well, not like I had much more space for them anyways. Screw you Hasbro, I’ll make some custom ones on my own when you clearance them from your site.
