Another gigantic release that doesn’t fit in my lightbox, I gotta get on getting a new 60 inch one! Sideshow’s had a few Gandalf releases, a more relaxed looking white Premium Format, a regular statue similar to this Premium Format, and a few dioramas. The Gandalf look I like is this particular one, so I’d only consider the statue or the Balrog diorama, the rest don’t appeal to me. The first thing to consider is : do you have the space for this? It’s huge for a PF due to the giant base. We’re talking like 28 inches.

The exclusive is a hatless portrait, which would’ve made photography a little easier. But as far as I’m concerned, classic Gandalf needs the hat. The huge base is well sculpted and the nameplate looks better than I thought it would’ve, I’m not usually the biggest fan of nameplates. As far as Premium Formats go, they went all out on the fabrics. His robe thick and layered, there’s a ton of fabric here. If you look at the bottom of it, it’s weathered quite realistically. Certainly looks like he’s been trekking around some mountains and wandering through some caves! There’s some nice mixed media in general with the rope and belts.

I’d rate the likeness as quite good, but not perfect. Something about the lips doesn’t look quite right. The wrinkles, the general shape, the expression, that looks great! The rest of the sculpting is solid all around. While fabric covers most of the statue, his staff and the crystal, his beard and hat, his general pose and boots, they’re all good.

The paint is consistently good in the few areas that don’t have fabric. Nice shading, the weathering effects look good, I don’t have any complaints about it.

I’ve heard lots of people praising the new Gandalf statue that just came out. If you’ve read through this review and thought, hey, that’s a good statue, but not quite perfect, check out that one instead. If you’ve read through and thought damn, this is a great statue, well, we agree! Another excellent Gandalf statue is the classic Gandalf on Shadowfax.

4.5/5. Easily one of the better Premium Format statues in my collection and an excellent representation of Gandalf.
