Superman/Batman Jim Lee DC Direct Statue Review

Posted by: Dr_Teng In: Statues

These two statues – Batman Jim Lee and Superman Jim Lee- are often considered two of the best DC statues, as well as being two of the most iconic. They’re based on Jim Lee’s covers from a few years back, and are often used together as companion pieces in people’s collections. I saw them at a friend’s house, and I’m a fan of the Jim Lee covers for both characters. Stumbled upon a local deal for both and snatched them up.

I’ll start with the Batman, since I’ve got a few problems with it. First off, the base is awesome. Looking at the rest of the pictures, you can see Catwoman’s whip, and a little touch of Poison Ivy. Once you start moving up, it goes downhill.

Batman’s chest sticks out way further than it should. It’s the effect you’d get if a huge bodybuilder was sucking it in. It gives him a really strange physique, which isn’t really accurate to the art at all. Then you move up further, and you’ve got Batman’s face.

It’s just too damn wide, when the art wasn’t. He looks huge and thick, like some sort of roided-out wrestler. The sculpt otherwise is excellent. His cape flows well and looks impressive, his boots/accessories/etc… look great, even the little folds in the clothing are done really well. I can see why people love this statue, especially if you have to look up at it, because the flaws aren’t nearly as easy to notice. But for me, those two flaws really hurt the statue. It’s such a shame, with a few changes, this could’ve been the best Batman statue out, but as-is, it just remains an excellent one.

Now see, I appreciate the Superman much more. His body looks far more similar to the art, and his face does as well. Unfortunately, the base isn’t nearly as awesome as the one on the Batman statue. Just as with Batman, the cape on the Superman comes off looking great, and really adds to the whole effect of standing on a roof. The paint is superb as well. I’d go so far as saying I have zero problems with Superman, and while he isn’t 100% accurate to the art, he’s damn close.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say this is the best Superman statue, though it’s quite close. It’d be tough to give the best Superman statue prize to a statue where he’s angry, it works with the storyline, but it isn’t quite Superman. That said, he’s a must-have in my collection and one of my favourite pieces.

Overall opinion – Batman is a 4/5, and Superman is a 5/5. Both pieces are reasonably large and heavy, though for those collectors that just LOVE 1/4th scale, it won’t do it for you.

Buying Options : These are long sold out at retail, but available for reasonable prices on Ebay.
