Silver Surfer : Rebirth of Thanos for $18.24 at Amazon
This story is the starting point for one of Marvel’s most entertaining events, the Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos is brought back to life because of a major imbalance in the universe, more people live now than have ever died, and he’s sent out to destroy half the life that exists. It’s a pretty badass idea for a storyline and doesn’t disappoint.
I’ll be honest, I used to think the Marvel cosmic stuff, outside of the Skrulls, Galactus, and Silver Surfer, were all lame as hell. I love sci-fi, but I just would not pick up a cosmic comic, even as a kid. Then a while back I read Annihilation, liked it, and started getting more into the cosmic comics. They’re enjoyable and spawned some of the best villains in the Marvel universe, as you’re basically seeing right here. If you want an intro to Thanos or the cosmic stuff, this is a pretty sweet place to start.
The art is straight up classic. Some of the iconic imagery of Thanos comes from this series, most of the rest comes from the followup, the Infinity Gauntlet storyline. You might notice this review barely mentions the Silver Surfer, despite it being his comic. While the story is based around the Silver Surfer, and his character is well written and all, Thanos is the one that shines.
