Punisher MAX Volume 3
Punisher MAX Volume 3 Hardcover available at Amazon for $19.79

Here we go, the third hardcover trade in the Punisher Max line. The first arc contained within is pretty powerful stuff, the second is geared more towards entertainment.

It starts off with a story about human sexual slavery. It’s rough, Ennis makes you feel for the characters involved even up till the end. Frank reacts in a different way here than he has with some of the previous stories, he gets a lot more pissed than usual in regards to what happened with the innocent people. Obviously he’s an angry guy in general, and especially the arc with his dug up family, but you can tell that it’s different this time. It’s not a light subject and Ennis gives it the depth it deserves.

Then you get to a slightly more light hearted arc. Well, you know, as light hearted as killing dozens of people gets. Frank’s been informed of some corporate crime, that if successful, is going to end up killing a lot of people. The question is, how does Frank kill a corporation? Well, won’t you be excited to find out!

During the arc, they hire a guy that was apparently popular enough in these issues that he got his own (brief) MAX series. Barracuda. A huge black gangster type dude that’s pretty much a mercenary version of the Punisher. They beat the hell out of each other, it’s fun. I can see why it was necessary, given how heavy the previous arc is. Despite the vast difference in terms of the feel of the two arcs, both work well.

4.5/5.
