Movic Cocona Shunya Yamashita statue review

Posted by: Dr_Teng In: Statues

I saw this Shunya Yamashita statue ages ago but since it was long out of print, I never had the opportunity to pick it up until I stumbled upon a recent Ebay auction. Considering I didn’t have a “Movic” tag on the site, I thought the company might have been out of business. Colour me surprised, they’re still around! They just don’t release things often. So let’s start off my first Movic review with their Cocona statue.

One thing that Shunya is known for but that hasn’t been present in the majority of statues based off of his work is the fun armour designs. Sure, they make little to no sense (as seen on the ninja that I reviewed) but the armour is meant purely for visual appeal. In this case, it accents certain areas, and apparently gives her breasts that added lift that a bra just wasn’t able to do! While this mix of armour and inappropriate battle clothing can make some of his work seem a tad ridiculous, it’s a visually interesting style that has a certain appeal.

As you can tell from my pics, she’s finely sculpted from both sides. She’s standing in a somewhat casual pose, has been overly endowed as is expected from Shunya, and as long as you like anime-styled characters, you’ll find little issue with the sculpt. The armour pieces, the little folds in the fabric around her knees, the detailed areas of the sword, and the ruffles in the skirt all stand out as looking rather nice. The skirt is made of a soft plastic and capable of being moved because it’s a guarantee pervs would want to pull it up, though it can’t be fully removed. The worst thing noticeable part of the sculpt is the mold lines in some areas, primarily the side. With most display situations, you’d never see them.

The paint is consistent but lacks any attempts at shading. The face is rather nice and sure, the vibrant blue hair is cool, but a little depth would’ve helped! Considering the different colours, folded areas, armour pieces, it’s amazing they didn’t put in at least a basic shading attempt anywhere. The lines are fairly clean but you can see the occasional minor issue. The base is about the most boring thing ever, talk about uninspired.

A really cute statue that’s a worthwhile purchase for Shunya fans and those that simply enjoy a scantily-clad anime lady. It’s slightly over the line of cute anime girl statue into kinda pervy territory, but compared to a lot of the near-naked anime statues I’ve shown previews of, this is downright classy.

4/5.

lol. GREAT review! Of course I luv this statue. Everything but the base, and by the time my eyeballs take it in, don’t care to anyway.

Shanno : Thanks, glad you enjoyed the review!

Wilkins : She can stand on her own but she’s more stable with the base.
