Kotobukiya started getting more heavily into Marvel with both a male line, and this, their female line, called Bishoujo. The first release was Black Widow.
The first thing you’ll notice about these statues is they’re really small. Sure, they’re quite affordable, but the preview pictures made me think they’d be larger. It’s a little under 8 inches high, including the base. On the plus side, they take up very little space so you’ll easily be able to display a collection of these in a small area.
Kotobukiya got the fantastic artist Shunya (who designed the Rei I’ve previously reviewed) on board and it shows. The great design is well complimented by the sculpting. The flowing hair, the face, the pose, all the little accessories, and the wrinkles in the farbic look fantastic. The belt looks slightly awkward.
It’s interesting to compare this line with the Ame-Comi line of DC statues. While I can appreciate some of their designs (the Poison Ivy is great), they’re very inconsistent and it seemed more like a way of trying to make money off of anime styles without a concrete gameplan. I like that Kotobukiya came up with a consistent line by a respected artist, since it almost guarantees good results.
I had zero problems with the paint. The application accented the piece nicely, it’s very clean. Detail work is top notch.
The statue does come off a bit top heavy and it’s got some junk in the trunk there, but I’m not complaining. If you’re concerned, it doesn’t look “over-sexualized”. It’s a nice display piece.
4.5/5. My only complaint is that I wish it were larger. But that’s a complaint for this whole line.
