Gentle Giant Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress statue review
Posted by: Dr_Teng In: Statues
One of the more interesting pieces I’ve taken a look at, Gentle Giant released this Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress statue in 2008 I believe. I’m not that familiar with Asajj Ventress, I know she’s a Star Wars expanded universe character and safe to say her and Dooku are pretty close. Still goes for a decent amount on Ebay, so let’s see if it’s worth it.

First thing I thought when I popped it out of the box was damn, Count Dooku’s likeness is damn good. They nailed it, both the sculpt and paint. His expression has an air of royalty to it, like he considers himself above it all. Seems to fit his attitude from the movies. His hair is painted well. The likeness here is way beyond Sideshow’s Premium Format sculpt.

Can’t really say if Asajj has a great likeness or not, but she’s a hot looking lady. Since I don’t usually think that about bald girls (aside from Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta), I’d say that’s quality praise right there. She’s got a very attractive face, it’s a great sculpt and the paint is immaculate.

The detail work isn’t overly complex but there’s a few nice touches. The way Asajj is holding the saber, her belt, good detail there. You can see some paint smudges but remember, these pictures are larger than life.

Aside from the faces, the paint on Asajj is interesting. It has an almost smokey finish to it. I’ve compared it to other pictures online and mine seems to have more of that than most others. I think I’d prefer a slightly cleaner version. The paint on the rest of Dooku is very basic but is applied well. He doesn’t have a terribly complex design so it would’ve been tough to screw up. The lightsabers look good and they put some thought into how they’re positioned. It’s an appealing looking statue all around.

The reason I said this was more interesting than most statues I’ve looked at is because it has a unique emotional feel to it. Much like the Vader kneeling statue, it shows the characters in a different light. In this case, I haven’t seen this feeling of devotion in a statue before. If that’s not your thing, you might not like this one.
