Final Crisis Comic EVENT Review

What a damn mess. The first time I read this, I read it in the suggested read order and it kind of made sense. This time I thought, hey I’m going to pretend I’m a regular guy and just read the main event on it’s own. Anyone else that tries that, good luck. Final Crisis was supposed to be the “Final Crisis” of the DC universe. Taking in all the history of the previous few major events and making a huge event where evil basically wins. But does it accomplish that?

It starts off with a New God being murdered. The level of power required to do this would be enormous, and it’s the beginning of a mystery that … wasn’t very satisfying. Darkseid and his minions have infiltrated Earth and are preaching the Anti-Life equation, causing more or less everyone that hears/accepts it to become a slave to Darkseid, I suppose under the goal of reshaping the universe under Darkseid’s rule.

The problems really start popping up when the multiverse comes into play.
The story bounces around all over the place and is damn near impossible to properly follow. It’s difficult for me to think of a way to list off how confusing and convoluted it is, despite having recently read a few of the other DC events, so you’d think I would be well versed on the DC universe. Apparently, not enough! You guys should check out the wiki article if you want to try to make sense of it.

The only neat thing to come of this whole debacle was the Rage of the Red Lanterns tie-in, but that would’ve happened regardless. Oh, and the covers were pretty stylish.

2/5 Just a disappointing event. I’ve seen some people say this is the pinnacle of DC events, but I doubt most would agree. I certainly don’t.

Tryin’ confusion in order to hypnotize readers to blind acceptance??
WOW. Glad I’m not a reader but unfortunate for most fans surely.

Think I’ll pass on the wiki info.

The strange thing is that DC’s been pretty good lately with their comics. There’s a lot of interesting stuff going on, the Blackest Night event is going well and the previous Green Lantern event was great, they’ve basically got a lot of fun stuff, so this event seemed so out of place. Ah well.

Year-long wallet-gouging cosmic comic events are the anti-equation.

Good news that the other stuff isn’t the sh…crashing.

I like the huge events, as long as they stick to a few general principles. Keep the main event entertaining, understandable to people who might not have read 30 years of comics history even if it’s on a superficial level, make the tie-ins add to the enjoyment of the main event, but not required reading for the main event, make the main event have some kind of lasting impact for at least a few years.

Final Crisis did very little of that and it’s lasting impact is the multiverse, which is fine but nothing special, and Batman’s death, which I guess is leading to Batman being a pirate for a while. Big whoop!
