There’s an active custom sculpture/kit scene going on that can be a little tricky to get into, but if you’re a statue collector, it can be worth learning about since they produce some fantastic stuff. In this case, I’m writing up a review of the 1/4th (though he seems more like 1/5th to me) Colossus by Hobbymaster. It was pricey, it took him a while to ship, but it was well worth it.
He came nicely packaged. I’d heard complaints about previous statues from HM breaking in the mail, but this one was great. Almost as well done as the more popular statue companies. I’ll state straight up that I don’t like the base. I don’t think it’s nearly as nicely done as most other bases put out, and if I ever have the technical skill, I’ll make a new one. Plus, without a peg system of some sort, Colossus doesn’t attach well to the base. I used museum putty to secure him properly.
The sculpt on this is one of the better Colossus sculpts released to date. Bowen has a solid one, but I prefer this pose and after seeing the Bowen bicep problem (look at the pics and you’ll see what I mean), it’s hard to ignore. The X-Men dio Colossus is probably better, but I haven’t seen that in person. Getting a few problems out of the way, the paint isn’t nearly as good as a Sideshow or Bowen. Some parts of it are very nicely done and it has a good metallic effect, but there’s a few areas that are sloppy and some bubbles here and there. The sculpt also has a few weaker areas that could’ve been improved. A little bit of work on the boots and a few lines in the metal could’ve been refined, but those are difficult to see. The middle section is a bit loose. I think most of them don’t come this way, but a little bit of glue will make it super tight.
Those problems are fairly minor. If this were from Sideshow, would I return it and get another? Yeah, I would. Are they a problem on a custom sculpt of one of my favourite characters? Hell no. I’ll just touch up some minor areas myself, because this has a fantastic look to it and I don’t expect another Colossus to come along as nice as this one for a while.
Overall, I’m going to give it a solid 4/5. It’s got some flaws, but it’s an impressive and very limited piece that really stands out in a collection.
