Captain America Marvel Knights Vol. 1 Hardcover from $20 on Amazon
The first issue starts off after 9/11 with Cap as a rescue worker and ends with him starting his fight against terror. It’s a strong starting point.
Art is really great until issue 10 (vision quest) where it becomes kinda gross. After that, the art seems to switch every arc or two with a new artist behind it. Some of the styles work very well for Cap, some don’t. It does manage to keep it fresh with some rather unique looks though.
The initial few arcs are really solid. They primarily deal with terrorism and how difficult it is for Cap to solve problems the old fashioned way, by punching them in the face. The world’s changed and he’s in a rough place. Once you get past those arcs, you end up with a few bizarre stories that don’t seem to fit with the themes they were previously going for. They even throw in an alternate reality Red Skull story where Germany won World War II. Not a bad read, just inconsistent. The last story in this collection is a tie-in with Avengers : Disassembled, which I thought was one of the better Marvel events and a great way to wrap up this run of Cap.
3.5/5. The first few stories and the last story are the best with some inconsistent art and writing in the middle. A worthwhile Cap read all around, just be prepared to hit some soft spots.
Volumes 2-5 are more difficult to find online. You’re stuck looking on Ebay for them.
