Captain America – Brubaker Run 1-25 (Omnibus) Review

Captain America Omnibus
Captain America – Omnibus currently available from third party sellers at Amazon

I finally got a chance to read the Brubaker run of Captain America, it’s considered the best run of Cap to date, and damn, the people that say that weren’t kidding.

The Omnibus covers the first 25 issues, ending in the death of Captain America. You’re treated to Cap kicking absurd amounts of ass, an amazing plot set in motion by the Red Skull to ruin Cap’s life and all of America, and a side of Cap that’s rarely seen. The side that shows his guilt over what happened to Bucky, it’s a very important part of this run.

It’s really impressive how much ground they manage to cover and how in depth they get with the characters. Even the issues that don’t have Captain America in them at all, just side characters from his past, they’re written in a fantastic way and treat the characters with respect. You can tell Brubaker isn’t just phoning this in, he treats Cap and the supporting crew better than any other Cap comics I’ve seen.

The art isn’t bad either. I don’t think it’s the best art I’ve ever seen or anything, but it’s consistently solid and I can’t think of any frames in these issues that bothered me. It suits the comics well.

5/5. If you don’t want the Omnibus, pick up some of the paperbacks instead. But either way, this is a must read for Marvel fans. Seriously, some of Marvel’s best.

Cap Vol. 1 Winter Soldier – issues 1-7
Cap Vol. 2 Winter Soldier – 8-9, 11-14
Cap Vol. 3 – 15-17 + 65th Anniversary Special
Cap Vol. 4 – 18-21
Cap Vol. 5 – 22-24
