Here’s the Bowen Designs Super Skrull statue. One of my favourite villains from the Marvel universe. He’s been making the rounds lately with Annihilation and post-Annihilation events, he’s also a classic Fantastic Four villain. All the existing busts of him were subpar so boy was I happy this statue was coming out.
The best thing they did with this sculpt is give him an incredibly angry expression, Super Skrull looks like an asshole. Which he is, so it’s completely appropriate. The rest of the sculpting is spot on too. The Thing arm is nicely detailed, the stretch effect comes off well, the flames and transparent legs are decent. From certain angles the transparency and the flames look a little off, but that’s more to do with transparent materials not looking the way the effect would in real life.
As far as bases go, I rather enjoy this one. It looks like a rocky moon area and has various broken space artifacts scattered around.
The paint on this came out great. I haven’t heard of any widespread paint problems despite him being released around the same time as Ultron. He’s a pretty colourful guy so I’m rather happy about that. The transition from the transparent legs to the rest is surprisingly nice. Detail work was impressive too.
4.5/5. Minor complaints aside, it’s a fantastic statue of a badass villain. I’m not sure how a statue could fix my issues with the fire/legs, I haven’t seen one that’s done it well yet.
