Bowen Designs Moon Knight statue review

Posted by: Dr_Teng In: Statues

I should start off saying I’m no fan of Moon Knight. The only exposure I’ve had with him is guest appearances in other comics, primarily older ones, where he’d be saying one cheeseball line or another. My friend bought this Bowen Designs statue for himself, but once I got a look at it, I knew I had to do a review. You’ll have to read below to find out whether that was because it’s godawful or awesome.

The first thing you’re likely to see from the above photo is the base is beyond enormous. I’m not sure a Bowen statue exists with a larger base than this one, which is a little puzzling. Why would they put him on such a huge base, which towers over every character? If I remember right, he’s almost as tall as Galactus with that base. Well-sculpted though it may be, what a bizarre choice.

As for the actual statue, he’s spectacular. The pose is downright menacing, something you’d expect out of a great Batman statue. His cape flows around him in a great way, his expression, covered by a mask though it may be, comes off very cool. The musculature really emphasizes his power.

The paint involves a lot of deep dark shading and while the rest is simply silver, it comes together to form a powerful effect. It’s very bold and stands out on a shelf. Well, that and the giant size of the thing.

4.5/5. I deducted half of a point because let’s face it, I doubt many people are going to want Moon Knight on their shelf. Looking up more information on him over Wiki, he’s even more of a total cheeseball than I thought, but the statue is so excellent that he deserves a second look.

Buying Options : Super cheap on Ebay, go for it.

I’ve only read a few older comics and a couple of the newer ones written by one of my favorite writers, Gregg Hurwitz one of the best novel suspense action mystery writers (and the head of story writing on series V) that I have ever experienced. Think Robert Crais only a star athlete from Yale /Harvard who actually responds to emails. I am a super fan but digress.

The MK covers are fantastic but I have always wanted this statue anyway and this great review reminds that it is a must have. They say that this is more appealing than the white version and from pics I believe that to be true, but if the white one was lighted correctly /differently in shots could change me. Also there have been some stunning repaints of this that have blown me away.

GREAT review Dr_T! Two EXCELLENT pictures! Thank you!

I don’t really see the “cheeseball” angle. :-) Pick up the Moon Knight series from 2006, written by Charlie Huston. Totally bad-ass. Especially the art by David Finch! Awesome book! But I guess originally he was conceived as a Batman rip-off! ;-) The Moon plane is cheesy…alright!!!

In the comics I read back in the day, it’d be something like “Everyone has passed out from gas….but I can hold my breathe longer since I’m powered by the moon!!” just golden age/silver age dialog, but filled with mentions of moon powers. That and it was well past either age, haha. I’ll have to check out the 2006 series though.

Oh, speaking of buying statues: guys, I need your advice: If you had three comiquettes on pre-order, those being the Hulk, Nightcrawler and Daredevil, and you’d have to cancel one of them…which one would it be…and why?? :-) Appreciate your input!!! Thanks!!!

I think Dr_Teng would have the best advice here but for me I would not cancel the Hulk. Even the regular is on the wait list and this statue is my fav of the 3. From seeing pictures of it only – by itself and posed with other statues it has huge presence.
Next I would not want to cancel Daredevil, again strictly personal choice and his pose/base influences me too. I find it very action dramatic.
So Nightcrawler would be the one I would cancel and also feel it may be the easiest to find down the road.

Out of those three, I like Daredevil the least as a character and the least as a comiquette, however he is a more popular character overall than Nightcrawler. Visually, I think the Hulk looks really dynamic and I bet it’ll go up in value, so keep that one for sure (worst case, you can always offload it later on if you don’t like it). So either Daredevil/Nightcrawler. Nightcrawler will probably be easier to find, I just think that statue looks nicer.

Thanks, guys! I’m really undecided, but you had good points! Being a huge DD fan…Kurt probably has to go…for now! ;-)
