12″ figures – Not as stupid as I used to think

Posted by: Dr_Teng In: Toys

I’ve been really impressed by some of the 12″ toys coming out this year. Jack Bauer/David Palmer apparently arrived at my wife’s place earlier today, and I can’t wait to see those, because they look like really incredible sculpts (at least in all the pictures I’ve seen). Those, along with the Dark Knight Hot Toys line, the Iron Man line, the Predator line, and the Hellboy line just look so ridiculously good that it blows me away.

Here’s a link over to Hot Toys, they do most of the lines :
Dark Knight stuff (Enterbay did the 24 figures)

Back in the day, when I used to buy the occasional action figure but I wasn’t really into collecting, all I knew of 12″ figure stuff was Hasbro’s Star Wars toys, which looked like giant crap for the most part. Then, when I started getting into statues, I saw a lot of the cheaper 12″ toys and heard non-stop complaints about Medicom, so interest wasn’t exactly high there either. But the more I see this year, the more I’m impressed.

I’ve always found it entertaining that in certain statue forums, if you post up stuff like 12″ figures, there’s always going to be some dude trying to rip into it with “oh hay nice barbie figure” or “lol i stopped playing with dolls when I was 12″. Collecting statues is a bourgeois bullshit hobby anyways, let’s face it. I love toys, props, statues, whatever, because they are physical representations of things I enjoy, or things that have inspired me. They look nice, but in the end, most of them are a waste of money and don’t do anything practical, beyond being really handy photography subjects. But some people just gotta try to feel better about their purchases, no matter how ridiculous!

The most funny part of that argument to me is that some of these current 12″ barbie doll child figures have face sculpts leagues beyond comparable statues. At the moment, the Bank Robber Joker and the Dark Knight Batman are both by far the top in their class for any figures/statues/etc… from the Dark Knight. The upcoming Godfather Hot Toys figure, from all the pictures shown so far, looks considerably nicer than the Cinemaquette $2k statue coming out. Yeah, it’s smaller, but it’s also what, 15 times cheaper and looks nicer, as well as being fully posable?

I’ve got an incoming Medicom Clone Trooper Commander that I won in a Sideshow contest a while ago. I was going to sell it off to fund other Sideshow purchases (hellllo Ackbar life-size bust) but I read a few reviews and decided, what the hell, I’ll crack it open since the Medicom Star Wars stuff doesn’t seem to get as trashed as say, their Metal Gear stuff (with good reason). Laffo, toys. This stuff is all so ridiculous, but at least it’s fun.
